College and Scholarship Information for KCK Parents

It is extremely important for parents to stay involved throughout a student's college and scholarship application process.  Here are some ways to help:

  • Encourage your student to apply early and often.

  • Remind your student of upcoming deadlines.

  • Proofread your student's application to look for mistakes or omissions.

  • Put the student in contact with family members, coworkers, or friends who have been to college.

  • Encourage the student to find an adult mentor to help with the process.

  • Don't fill out applications for the student.  It's good for the student to become independent and take ownership and responsibility for decisions.

  • Take students on campus visits and/or encourage the student to attend visits through high school, TRIO, or GEAR UP programs.

What should students be doing prior to their senior year?
  • Learning!  The most important factor colleges look for when deciding which student to admit is the student's high school transcript.  It is very important that a student takes college preparatory classes and achieves a high GPA.
  • Studying for the ACT or SAT.  After grades, college entrance exam scores are the second most important factor that colleges take into consideration.  It is recommended that students take one or both of these tests during the junior year of high school and then again later in the year or in October of their senior year.
  • Getting involved in leadership activities.  Colleges like to see students involved in clubs and activities including community service, student council, jobs, athletics, music, debate, etc.
  • Start learning about financial aid.  There are many sources of aid available to help students and families pay for for college.
  • Learning about career options and taking career inventory assessments.  Students should start thinking about what they enjoy doing and what type of personality they have.  This can help  determine what career field would be best for them.
